I do believe that there is hope for our patients even now as increasingly delirium is recognised for what it is instead of being accepted as inevitable or thought to be benign. We haven't quite reached the tipping point (ala M Gladwell) but we will triumph!

"Your patient after leaving ITU is unable to return to anything like the life they enjoyed before."

Definitely true! I am a nurse and it saddens me whenever we have a patient like this. It hurts our feelings to see them getting out of the hospital with no hope to enjoy their life ever again. I guess we just have to deal with that nature.

A couple of useful papers outlining the relationship between delirium and long-term cognitive impairment:
Delirium as a predictor of long-term cognitive impairment in survivors of critical illness.
TD Girard, JC Jackson, PP Pandharipande et al. Critical Care Medicine 2010; 38: 1513-191
Delirium and long-term cognitive impairment. Alasdair MacLullich, Anna Beaglehole, Roanna Hall and David Meagher. International Review of Psychiatry 2009; 21: 30-42.
Thanks Valerie

"Investigations into the relationship between delirium and long-term cognitive outcomes have consistently demonstrated a link."

Wow! This is amazing. But if it's not too much to ask, can you cite the specific studies that yielded such findings? Thanks.

"Investigations into the relationship between delirium and long-term cognitive outcomes have consistently demonstrated a link. Emerging data indicates delirium may lead to or accelerate dementia"

This is real bad. Dementia is not something very pleasant.
